Embarkation Day
Six "Must Do" Things To Do On Embarkation Day:
Complete All Online Check-in and Documents in Advance.
- Check-in: Log into your cruise line's website or app as soon as online check-in opens and complete all necessary forms, health questionnaires, and upload your security photo.
- Documents: Print your boarding pass and luggage tags at home. Have all required documents (passport/ID, boarding passes, visas) collected in a secure, easily accessible place (like a specific pocket in your carry-on).
Be Smart Packing Your Carry On.
Your checked luggage may not arrive at your cabin until late afternoon or evening. Your carry-on should be a small bag or backpack with everything you need for the first few hours on board.
- Essentials: Required documents, medications, valuables (jewelry, electronics, money), and your cruise card (once you receive it).
- First-Day Items: A swimsuit, sunscreen, a change of clothes, and anything you need immediately for lunch or the pool deck.
Arrive at Your Assigned Check-in Time.
Cruise lines assign staggered arrival times to manage crowds.
- The Sweet Spot: Arriving exactly at your assigned time is usually best. Arriving too early may mean waiting outside the terminal with no amenities.
- Porters: As soon as you arrive, give your large, tagged suitcases to the porters. They'll handle getting them to your cabin (don't forget a small tip!).
Skip the Crowded Buffet for Lunch.
The main buffet is often a chaotic bottleneck on embarkation day.
- Explore Alternatives: Check the cruise line app or daily program for other complimentary venues open for lunch, such as the Main Dining Room or smaller casual cafes. These options are often calmer and a more pleasant way to start your vacation.
Explore the Ship and Make Reservations.
Your cabin won't be ready until mid-afternoon (typically around 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM). Use the initial hours to get your bearings and take care of important items.
- Muster Drill: Complete your mandatory safety briefing (e-muster drill on the app and/or in-person check-in at your station) right away.
- Bookings: Visit the specialty dining, spa, or shore excursion desks to make any last-minute reservations before they book up.
Attend the Sail-Away Party.
This is a classic cruise tradition that officially kicks off your vacation.
- Location: Head up to the pool deck or an outdoor public deck shortly before the ship's scheduled departure time.
- Celebrate: Grab a drink (especially if you bought a beverage package!), enjoy the music, and watch the land disappear over the horizon as you set sail.
Make Sure You Start Your Cruise Off On The Right Foot.
Getting to the port, waiting in lines, checking in, and making your way through security can all take a toll a your patients. Following these six tips on embarkation day can make that stress quickly melt away and get your vacation kicked off into high gear. There is no reason you need to start your cruise off stressed out.
